"The Gaze" illustration publication
I’ve had an illustration published on Critical Read (<- link to article) as part of their compilation of essays and artwork inspired by the Mona Lisa. They’ve paired it with the 4th story “You’ve Seen the Mona Lisa” by Bryan St. Amand.
My artist statement was as follows:
Most people tend to fixate on Mona Lisa’s smile but I’ve always been fascinated with her mysterious eyes. Whether it’s their ability to follow your gaze from any angle or their lack of eyebrows subtly disrupting your visual system, I find them both otherworldly and slightly unnerving. I chose to make these eyes the focal point of my piece, exaggerating their effects with hypnotic beams and spirals like a pair of headlights radiating directly into your soul.
